Creating a Google Gemini API key and using it in NerrieBuilder
Do you want to use your own Google Gemini key in NerrieBuilder? Then you need a free account at Google AI Studio. Don't worry: you don't need any technical skills. In this guide you will create your own key step by step and paste it in the right spot in NerrieBuilder. Take your time, you can't break anything.
What is Google AI Studio?
Google AI Studio is Google's free place where you create a personal key for the Gemini language models. With such a key, NerrieBuilder can generate text and content on your behalf through Google.
You create a key on your own Google account. The key is yours and stays yours. You can always delete or replace it later.
Good news: there is a generous free tier
A big advantage of Google AI Studio is its free tier. You can start without adding a payment method and without a credit card. There are some usage limits (for example a maximum number of requests per minute and per day), but for starting out and testing that is more than enough. So you don't have to pay anything to get going.
Step by step: creating your key
- In your browser, go to https://aistudio.google.com.
- Click Sign in and log in with your regular Google account (the same account you use for Gmail, for example). Don't have a Google account yet? Then create one for free first.
- The first time, Google will ask you to accept the Terms of Service. Tick the box and agree.
- Now go to the key page at https://aistudio.google.com/apikey, or click Get API key in the left menu.
- Click the Create API key button.
- Google automatically creates a default project for you, or lets you pick an existing one. Just choose the suggested project and confirm. Your key is now generated.
- You now see your new key. A Google key is a long string of letters and numbers that starts with AIza... Click the Copy button to copy the entire key.
Copy the full key, from the first to the last character. If you like, paste it into a notepad as an intermediate step so you definitely don't lose it.
Pasting the key into NerrieBuilder
- In NerrieBuilder, click your name/account in the top right.
- Go to Settings.
- Open the AI tab. This tab holds both the AI keys and the Stock photo keys.
- Paste your Google Gemini key into the correct field.
- Click Test to check that the key works.
- Then click Save. Done.
Security: good to know
- Treat your key like a password: keep it secret and don't share it with anyone.
- You can delete or replace your key at any time in Google AI Studio, so you stay in control.
- NerrieBuilder stores your key encrypted and never shows it in full again. So you don't have to worry about others being able to see it.
What does this unlock?
With your own Gemini key, NerrieBuilder uses your Google account to generate text and content. You are now fully set up.
Done! You just created and connected your own Google Gemini key. Well done, this was the technical part and you managed it all by yourself.
